Financial education, investment risk management and asset protection, sustainability, and thoughtful wealth transfer are among Ann’s core values. For more than 15 years, she has provided highly personalized financial, investment, and wealth management guidance to individuals, their families and trusts, and their business and philanthropic organizations.

Ann grew up in Houston, Texas, where MacNaughton & Associates is headquartered. She attended college and graduate school in Bloomington (IN) and Houston; worked in South India as a budding anthropologist during the 1970s; studied interest-based negotiation with Roger Fisher at Harvard; developed curriculum for and taught for 3 years as adjunct law professor a course in Environmental Dispute Resolution served as in-house counsel to oil companies during the 1970s-80s; and served as outside counsel to a broader set of clients through large and small firms including her own until 2004.

In 2002, Ann served by American Bar Association presidential appointment as a delegate to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, where her book Environmental Dispute Resolution: An Anthology of Practical Solutions (ABA 2002) was first released. While there, she keynoted on the topic of Financial Incentives for Sustainable Development at the linked Enviro-Law Conference in nearby Durban, South Africa. In 2003, she consulted to the Kingdom of Nepal on interest-based conflict management system design for that nation’s then-new modern judicial system and, in Kathmandu, trained attorneys and village elders in interest-based negotiation.

After her successful law practice and consulting career advising business owners and also serving actively as a mediator and mediator trainer on a broad range of issues that spanned securities law, environmental dispute resolution, and internal/external stakeholder conflict management, Ann pivoted in 2004 into tIhe financial advisory sector. Her singular intention at that time was to create at a large national brokerage firm an otherwise unavailable investment strategy designed to incent perpetual improvement in corporate governance by US-domiciled companies.

Intending to return a year later to active business law and risk management consulting, she discovered that she enjoyed advising individuals and their organizations even more than advising corporate organizations. She decided to remain in the financial advisory sector, earning certifications and designations as a Certified Private Wealth Advisor®, a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy®, a Certified Portfolio Manager®, and a Certified Financial Planner®.

In late 2019, Ann transferred her licenses to LPL Financial – the largest independent US brokerage firm – enabling MacNaughton & Associates LLC to provide a boutique level of personalized services with the scale and resources of a nationwide financial advisory firm. She tailors individualized strategies grounded in individual client core values, financial risk tolerances, time horizons, liquidity needs, and long-term goals. A lifetime learner, Ann has earned and maintains CFP® CPM® CPWA® and CAP® credentials that each require annual continuing education, periodic examinations, and adherence to a fiduciary code of ethics:

  • Her Certified Financial Planner™ designation is formal recognition of her expertise in the areas of financial planning, taxes, insurance, estate planning, and retirement.
  • Her CPM® designation deepens her competencies in valuation analysis, portfolio construction, and risk management, and delivers to clients a deeper understanding of fundamental security analysis, asset allocation, and portfolio management strategies.
  • Her CPWA® certification attests to her advanced knowledge and skills across portfolio strategies and income planning, family dynamics and wealth transfer, asset protection and risk management, closely-held business ownership, charitable gifting, and a wide range of complex issues faced by wealthy individuals and families.
  • As a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy®, she assists clients with a variety of lifetime gifting strategies.
